Community Partnership – Campion School
Wolseley UK is keen to promote the benefits of volunteering opportunities and to encourage staff to play active roles in the communities where Wolseley UK has a substantial presence.
To this end, Wolseley UK is involved in several projects allowing staff to participate in appropriate schemes that are relevant to our business. One example of such a scheme is the Wolseley-Campion School partnership in Leamington Spa. Campion is the closest secondary school to Spa Park in south Leamington, where Wolseley UK established its headquarters in 2005.
The school provides for students between the ages of 11 to 18 and has specialist college status for Business, Enterprise and Visual Arts. Campion School takes students from a wide range of age groups and social backgrounds, and until recently had enjoyed a mixed reputation. Campion was chosen as Wolseley UK's partner partly because of its proximity, but also because of the difference it was felt that Wolseley's input could have on transforming pupils' lives.
Mentoring scheme
The mentoring scheme aims to help students to maximise their potential, broaden their understanding of opportunities, to ease the transition from school to work/further education and help the students to see themselves as others see them, establishing trust and a 'comfortable' relationship.
The varying ages (years 7- 10), abilities and circumstances of the students made some initial meetings easier than others, and clearly the students faced different challenges. The initial contacts were deemed a fantastic success by the volunteers, the students and the school. There are now regular fortnightly one-to-one meetings, with both students and mentors reporting benefits from the initiative.
The mentoring scheme is only one of the Campion partnership programmes. Wolseley UK volunteers are also helping to establish ischool businesses, including uniform sales and 'Art for Rent.' Volunteers also provide help and advice in a number of other areas, such as landscaping.
Uniform business
The uniform business involved recruiting a board of student directors that would run each division of the business with the support of Wolseley UK's volunteers. A series of board meetings chaired by the students has been taking place on a bi-monthly basis, where progress is reviewed and any significant issues are identified. To date, this project has been a great success, with the uniform being successfully launched in time for the beginning of the new academic year, and sales figures topping the £3,000 mark.
Road safety
As part of its partnership with Campion School in Leamington Spa, Wolseley UK is helping to educate students about the importance of road safety. During Road Safety Week 2006, a number of sixth form students attended a practical and theory based workshop at Wolseley UK's national distribution centre in Leamington Spa, run by Wolseley UK's fleet training company Transport Training Agency.
