Wolseley UK produces over 2,000 items of print a year, ranging from flyers to catalogues running to hundreds of pages, many in full colour, promoting everything from garden and kitchen ideas to more humble bricks and pipes.
Wishing to reduce its usage of virgin paper pulp, Wolseley UK selected as one of its standard grades Era Silk, a paper manufactured from 50% genuine waste pulp, with the balance coming from certified forests.
“We were looking for an alternative coated sheet, and Era Silk's recycled content was attractive as it fitted in with our environmental policies. Wherever possible we offer our customers sustainable building products, and switching to recycled paper is consistent with our environmental ideals.”

Although Wolseley UK has invested heavily in IT to provide on-line service, it finds that printed material still plays a major role in providing highly detailed product specification and ideas in a portable and accessible format. Accuracy of colour is important for items such as paving slabs, timber, or kitchen units, as is reproduction sufficiently sharp to show fine detail of everything from tools to door handles.
“It was important that we did a trial run, as we had questions about its printability and finishing because of the recycled content, but the trial dispelled all our concerns.
The quality was evident – it performed just as well as a nonrecycled coated paper.”

The company uses a roster of printers, all of which hold FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Chain of Custody certification. Other important factors in Wolseley UK's choice of printers are the ability to work to tight deadlines, as much of the print is tied into quarterly campaigns and special promotions, and to handle distribution to all its branches as well.
“We are very happy with the results, and have purchased more than 350 tonnes over the last eight months, the majority in 130, 150 and 190 gsm weights. As well as our product guides and brochures, we are also using it for Extra News, our customer magazine, and Connections, our in-house newsletter.”

Wolseley UK is looking to extend further its use of recycled paper, and has trialed the use of copier paper with 100% recycled content. A recent initiative has seen a suite of materials for Wolseley UK's new Sustainable Building Center being produced, appropriately enough, using 100% recycled paper.
The Benefits of recycling
Switching to recycled paper will enable Wolseley UK to divert more than 750 tonnes of paper per year from the waste stream.
Wolseley UK’s switch to recycled paper is helping it achieve its environmental objectives, and provides a clear demonstration of its environmental commitment.
Using recycled paper complements the company's well-established waste paper collection system, bringing about a closed loop on paper recycling.
The inclusion of appropriate iconography and wording on publications printed on recycled paper is promoting greater awareness of recycling-related opportunities.
