What insurance does a plumber need?

There are a range of potential requirements. You may wish to protect your tools and equipment, satisfy your liabilities exposure and ensure you are protected from certain legal costs.

  • Tools cover*

Buy cover via our online service and you’ll have the option to insure tools – including ones privately owned by your workers

  • Plumbers Liability Insurance*

Working as a tradesperson, you have a number of liabilities that can be protected against with the right insurance policy. Please see below.

  • Employers Liability for plumbers*

Where you have one or more people working under your instruction, Employers Liability insurance is a legal requirement in the UK. And it’s important to realise that this isn’t restricted to payroll staff. Even if you have part time or casual workers, you are required to take out Employers Liability.

  • Plumber’s Public Liability Insurance*

Public Liability Insurance isn’t required by law, but if you are working for a main contractor or end client directly, it is quite common for a tradesperson to be asked to show that cover is in place. It can even be a contractual requirement in some cases.

  • How much does plumbing insurance cost?

The cost of plumber insurance will depend on a range of factors; the number of workers you have, how much Public Liability you require as well as things like whether you work at height, depth, use heat or have previous claims. Using the online service means you can get a quote and buy cover in a matter of minutes.

Plumbing and heating contractors’ insurance – what is included?

It’s worth thinking about the various risks that you and your business face when deciding what cover to take out. Wolseley Insurance Services offer you access to a policy that has tradesperson liability at its core, with a range of optional extras you may wish you buy.

  • Public Liability Insurance for plumbing and heating engineers*

Public Liability insurance protects your business in the event that a member of the public alleges that have suffered a loss, damage, or injury as a consequence of your work. It could be something as simple as you working in a private home, a pipe fitting working loose, and flood damage being caused. Where the client makes a claim against you, Public Liability can cover the costs of the claim, including legal fees as well as any compensation awarded.

  • Other types of liability insurance for plumbing and heating contractors*

In addition to Public Liability insurance, you should consider Employers Liability Insurance (which is a legal requirement if you have anyone working for you, even on a part time or casual basis) and Product Liability Insurance.

  • Employers Liability*

Employers Liability works in much the same way that Public Liability does, but instead of protecting you from claims from members of the public, it protects you from claims made by employees that have suffered an injury, loss or damage to property as a consequence of their work for you. If deemed to have been faulty and caused financial loss, you could potentially face a claim.

  • Contractors All Risks*

Buy a plumbing contractors insurance policy via Wolseley Insurance Services and you will have the option to add Contractors All Risk insurance, which effectively protects you from costs in the event that the construction project you are working on is damaged or destroyed while you are still working. It can cover the construction itself, as well as tools, plant and machinery – and even your temporary site office, if you have one.

  • How much Public Liability insurance should a plumbing or heating contractor take out?

You have a choice of indemnity limit (the maximum amount the policy will pay out in an insured event). You can decide what level of cover you think is appropriate to your business. The level of cover chosen will alter what you pay.

What insurance does a gas engineer need?

Contractors All Risk (Sometimes referred to as ‘CAR’ or ‘Contract Works’) can be bought as an add on to your policy. Contract works insurance is cover that can reinstate or repair the building works resulting from any damage (hence the name 'all-risks'). It provides cover for works while you are on site, whether that is a new build, extension or part of a renovation. The policy can also be extended to cover:

  • Tools cover*

Your tools are the lifeblood to your business. You simply can’t work without them. CAR can include cover for your tools – including your employees privately owned ones.

  • Owned and hired in plant insurance*

Where you own valuable plant and equipment, it makes sense to protect it from theft and damage. You may also hire in equipment from time to time, and the hirer will typically insist that you have insurance in place for it. Taking out annual cover could be cheaper than taking out short term cover at the time of the hire.

  • Commercial Legal Protection*

For smaller businesses which don’t have their own in-house legal resources in particular, this can be a really useful cover to have in place. Legal expenses can help you to overcome a range of common business problems, for example: you need expert legal advice quickly, a dispute with an employee escalates and can’t be resolved or you receive notice of an enquiry into your tax or VAT returns.

  • Gas engineer Public Liability insurance*

Public Liability insurance is important for gas engineers. It protects the business in the event that a member of the public claims to have suffered injury or damage to their property as a consequence of your work.

While Public Liability isn’t legally required for gas engineers, it is likely to be a contractual requirement with many main contractors or end clients.

  • Employers liability for gas engineers*

Where you have employees – even part time or casual workers – you are required by law to take out a minimum of £5m in Employers Liability insurance.

  • Should I consider product liability insurance?

Buy a Tradesperson Insurance policy via Wolseley Insurance Services and you will also benefit from Product Liability Insurance as standard. Where you supply and / or fit equipment, you can be held liable should that equipment fail in some way that leads to financial loss. Product Liability can protect you from the costs of the repair or replacement of the product.

What’s included in Bathroom and Kitchen fitters insurance?

There are a range of covers that you may wish to consider, and that can be included in a single policy, as outlined below.

  • Public Liability Insurance for kitchen and bathroom installers*

Public liability insurance protects you from claims made by members of the public that they have suffered an injury or loss as a consequence of your work. For example, this could be that a leak damages some flooring or carpet. Or, it could be that you accidentally damage something in your customers home while moving equipment in and out of the premises.

  • Employers Liability Insurance*

Where you have anyone working under your instruction, even if only casually or part time, you must have Employers Liability Insurance in place under UK Law. This can protect you in the event that a worker claims that they have suffered injury or loss as a consequence of their work with you.

  • Kitchen and bathroom fitters’ Product Liability Insurance*

It may be that you supply some or all of the kitchen or bathroom fittings you are installing. If a part or unit was subsequently deemed to be faulty or not fit for purpose, you could find yourself responsible for the costs for replacement and re-work to install it. Product Liability protects you from the costs of the resultant damage as a consequence of the product failure.

  • What else can be included on a bathroom and kitchen fitters insurance policy?

There are a number of additional covers that can be included. You can insure your tools (including privately owned ones), as well as take out legal expenses cover, which can protect you from costs in a range of situations such as a Contract dispute.
